Welcome to the Argentina DIS 2007 Originating Cultures Database
This database is a collection of information about the originating regions of the three major immigrant groups to Argentina. Once in Argentina, we will be able to use this database to assess how far the customs and traditions we observe have deviated form the original. Using this database we will therefor be able to begin to assess the degree of assimilation or adaptation of each group. We will also be able to recognize the ways in which the receiving culture ("Argentina") has adopted elements of the cultures and practices brought to it by the immigrants.
The five Databases focus on
Economy, class structure, and social support networks in British, Italian, and Jewish society GROUP E
Family in Britain, Italy, and Jewish communities (marriage traditions, child raising, role of relatives, inheritance, etc.) GROUP F
Food and culinary customs in Britain, Italy, and Jewish traditions (typical meals, customs, menus, etc) GROUP G
Religious traditions in Britain, Italy, and Judaism (main religious holidays, customs, practices) GROUP H
Identity, customs, and society in Britain, Italy, and Jewish communities (non-religious holidays and customs, sense of identity, sense of “home” and homeland etc.) GROUP I
To get started,
- create an identity for yourself in the "settings" menu (you may need to log out and then log in to create an identity. If you need the wiki-wide password it is "Argentina")
- click the link to the page you want to edit and hit "edit page"
- paste in the material you have created in Word and adjust the formatting
- select "preview"
- revise as necessary
- select "save" (don't forget to do this!!) If you feel safer, save, then go to "edit page" again rather than using "preview"
- to see who has edited recently, scroll to the very bottom of the page and select "history" (you can compare versions there as well)

Basic format for this wiki:
- leave a space before each paragraph to put the material in a box
- use exclamation marks to create titles--the more exclamation marks the smaller the title
- type two apostrophies on each side of a word or phrase to put it in ''italics'' (not quotation marks)
- type two stars on each side of a word or phrase to put it in **bold**
- create links by placing the material into square brackets [home]
- create an external link for a different word or phrase by typing the URL or page name then a horizonal line then the word to be the link--like this: [Originating Nation Database: Family|GROUP F] which makes "GROUP F" a link to the page named "Originating Nation Database: Family"
- to use a coding symbol such as ] as itself, type <raw> before it and </raw> after it
