F. A. Q.s as we prepare to depart!

Below are some questions and the answers I would give to them. Please feel free to post or email other questions

Phone update!

Mine arrived on the 27th, just as they said it would. It was activated on the 26th. You can check rates at http://www.piccellwireless.com/latest/index.php, where you can also get your phone number, account number, and PIN number (which will allow you to actually use the phone). Make sure you write down these numbers while you have internet access. And share your phone number with your family before you leave. The +54 is the country code for Argentina from a cell phone. To call from a regular phone in the US people need to dial 011 54 and then the number.

FYI: My phone number is +54 50402281. Sandra

Where is the packing list?

There's a copy on Blackboard, and another one here

What else do I need to think about and remember as I prepare?

Check out the information posted on Blackboard (and reproduced with a table of contents, here)

Cell Phone questions

I ordered the Cell phone but the website said the phone would arrive on January 4. Help!!

Mine arrived on the 27th, just as they said it would. It was activated on the 26th. If any phones arrive after you leave we will get phones in Argentina. Don't panic.

The cell phone website asked whether I would be enrolled in a college program in Argentina, I said no. Is that right?

Yes. We are working with IES, but you are not enrolled in a credit-bearing course from some other college whilst in Argentina (just the DIS)

My phone came but I can't find the phone number. Where is it?

You can find your phone number, account number, and PIN number (which will allow you to actually use the phone) at the Piccell website: http://www.piccellwireless.com/latest/index.php, where you can also check rates. Make sure you write down these numbers while you have internet access. And share your phone number with your family before you leave. The +54 is the country code for Argentina from a cell phone. To call from a regular phone in the US people need to dial 011 54 and then the number.

FYI: Sandra's phone number is +54 50402281.

Packing questions

Sandra said we needed to take two bags to check in; but Ada said one. Which is the right answer?

Whichever feels better to you! Both Ada and Sandra have traveled a lot, but both are very different (did you notice that?). Sandra always ends up with a lot of junk (books, souvenirs, etc) that fill her bag and make it very heavy, so she has learned to take two under-filled bags to allow room to grow and to avoid her one bag being over-weight. Ada packs more intelligently and has room to shop and fit her purchases into one bag. It is much easier to have only one bag, of course. If you only carry a backpack or small book bag onto the plane, two check-in bags are manageable; if you carry an in-flight bag (or lacrosse stick) and a bookbag on the plane, you should plan to only have one check-in bag. Sandra is planning to have two check-in bags, one containing her regular clothing and books, and the other (smaller one) containing shampoo, soap, first aid supplies, sunblock, an empty water bottle, and other "wet" stuff that she used to take on the plane but must now check in. Ada is planning to pack sensibly and only take one bag.

Whatever you plan, make sure the bag is sturdy, has a tag with your name and address, and--ideally--has something that will make it easy to identify like a bright label or a ribbon or piece of wool tied around the handle

So now about the in-flight bag?

Again, there is no right answer. You should keep essential medications with you (in the prescription or original packages), along with any spare contact lenses and a case (but NOT large containers of contact lense solution!). You'll be checking in your main bag(s)when you arrive at JFK and not seeing it again until the next morning. What will you need on the plane? A book or something to read maybe (how about the Argentina Guide book?), your iPod or other entertainment equipment. And maybe a neck pillow and eyemask if you like that kind of thing (Sandra loves both). A toothbrush and toothpaste will feel fabulous in the morning, as will mouthwash (unopened and sample size remember, and in a clear baggie)! Allergy medication or painkillers if you might need that. But not really much else. You'll have your passport, ticket, money, ISIC card, etc., (see "paranoid packing list") and you'll want to carry any electronics, computer equipment, camera and film, and other valuables. You should plan to check in everything else (including spare batteries, cables, and any rechargers unless you are really paranoid).

Contact questions

How do we reach Sandra and Ada if we need to do so before the trip?

Sandra will be at her house until we leave. Try 908-757-1051 OR 908-757-0743. She will be reading email (sjamieso@drew.edu) and will be on IM sometimes (screen name: profJamieson). On the day of departure, try her cell: 908-642-2224.

Suppose the professors need to reach the students?

That's why we asked for contact information. Don't worry. If we need to contact you we will track you down!

Transportation problems

Suppose I can't get a ride to the airport after all?

Walk?

Okay, seriously, call one or both of us and we will try to arrange a ride. You could also call someone else in the class--or send an email to everyone--and see if you can get a ride with them.

DO CHECK this as soon as possible though. We would like everyone to make it to the airport!

Suppose no one can get to the airport to pick me up when we get back?

There will be a bus coming back to Drew for whomever needs it.

Housing problems

Suppose I need to stay over the night before we leave?

Contact the housing office and/or the Office of Off campus programs. Or see if someone in the class would be willing to host you for the night . . .

Suppose I need to stay at Drew when we get back rather than going home and coming back to Drew two days later?

Contact the housing office and/or the Office of Off campus programs. Or see if someone in the class would be willing to host you for one or two nights . . .

Random problems

Supose I cannot get to the Office of Off Campus Programs to pick up my spending money before we leave?

Ada and Sandra will spend it for you . . .

Joke. We will distribute any money that is not collected.

Suppose I don't pick up my ticket?

DON'T ASK THIS QUESTION!! Go to Off Campus Programs now and pick it up. If you need to pay bills or turn in forms first, do that SOON!!!!!!

You're making Sandra nervous . . .

What if I have another question?

Send us an email and we'll try to answer it
